1. Standards and categories
Pick Cat6A (or better) for new horizontal runs when 10G or dense PoE is in scope. Do not mix Cat5e leftovers with new drops "to save budget" — you inherit the weakest link.
2. Pathways and separation
Separate data trays from power. Respect bend radius for copper and fiber. Leave spare capacity in conduits for the next floor expansion.
3. Rack and MDF/IDF layout
Plan rack units for switches, patch panels, fiber trays, and UPS before ordering gear. Label both ends of every permanent link. Document patching in a living sheet, not a whiteboard photo.
4. Fiber backbone
Use single-mode between buildings and long campus runs. Test OTDR and end-to-end loss; keep spare strands dark for growth.
5. PoE and heat
Count cameras, access points, and phones on PoE budgets. Crowded high-PoE bundles raise heat — ventilation and cable management matter as much as switch SKUs.
Acceptance tests you should demand
- Permanent-link certification for copper (not just "lights blink").
- Fiber loss/OTDR reports with dates and operator names.
- As-built drawings that match the ceiling, not the sales PDF.
- Spare ports and labeled unused drops for the next project wave.
